Abu-Ali Abdur'Rahman was housed on the State of Tennessee’s death row for over 30 years. His capital murder trial, held in Nashville in 1987, lacked both crime scene evidence and presentation of his history of mental illness due to the violent abuse he endured as a child. Eight trial jurors now say that they no longer have confidence in their sentencing verdict.

Abu earned a paralegal degree, private investigation degree, and Rule 31 mediator degree (Lipscomb University) while on in prison. He is a senior mediator and serves as the elected representative of his unit, negotiating with the prison administration on behalf of his fellow prisoners. Abu is passionate about protecting children and is always seeking to mature his spirituality. He loves animals and nature. His favorite snacks include popcorn, Now and Laters, and chicken wings with ketchup.

His set execution date was removed and exchanged for a life in prison sentence through the Davidson County Criminal Court on November 9, 2021. Abu’s legal battle to set aside his death sentence finally ended in success after 30-plus years.
